Champagne’s sparkling performance
Fine wine as an alternative asset, generally delivers stability and strong growth over the long term. We have commented throughout the year on the general market correction, as reported in the one-year and monthly performance data published by Liv-ex. We advise our clients consistently that fine wine assets should be held for 3 to 5 years to enjoy the best returns.
Champagne’s performance illustrates this very clearly and remains strong, with an average 53% five-year growth recorded by the Liv-ex Champagne 50. This is an outstanding return compared with the FTSE 100’s 6.8% rise over the same period.
The key Champagne investment wines are performing above the general sector trend, and the discounts that have been on offer during the period of market adjustment have boosted demand. Four of the top wines traded on Liv-ex by volume in 2023 have been Champagnes.

Champagne saw some green shoots of growth in October 2023 and, even though there was a dip in November, this 'volatility' may suggest that prices are approaching the market low. The December data due in January will be an important indicator as investors seek the best opportunities for growth in 2024.
