Royal occasions have been celebrated with Bordeaux First Growths to Sussex sparkling wines. What will King Charles III be toasting this historic occasion with?

The Coronation preparations are now in full swing across the country to mark the historic crowning of King Charles III. The pomp and ceremony of these great events demand the very best and the favourites of the kings and queens of the day.

Royal celebration wines

King Edward VII marked his coronation with Mumm Champagne in 1902 and H.M. Queen Elizabeth II celebrated hers with Traminac 1947 in 1953. That vintage of the Croation wine from the Iloki Cellars was selected in recognition of the year Queen Elizabeth married Phillip.

Various state banquets have seen the endorsement of Sussex vineyard, Ridgeview by the Royal family. The late Queen hosted President Obama in 2011 at Buckingham Palace where Ridgeview Fitzrovia Sparkling Rose 2004 was served. Followed spectacularly by Burgundy icon, Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezaux 1990 and Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin 2002.

Veuve Cliquot wines have been a favourite of the British royalty with Queen Victoria said to have enjoyed a daily tipple of VC. Along with Bollinger, Krug, Louis Roederer and Pol Roger, the Champagne houses will have their royal warrants reviewed with the passing of the crown.

The Bordeaux big guns are savoured at important state occasions. Chateau Margaux 1961 was served to French President Nicolas Sarkozy at a banquet at Windsor Castle in 2008. The Queen hosted Chinese President, Xi Jinping at Buckingham Palace in 2015, where they were served Chateau Haut Brion 1989.

What will King Charles III be charging his glass with?

Wine critic and member of the Royal Household Wine Committee, Jancis Robinson will have helped decide the wines to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III to be served to those attending the celebrations at Buckingham Palace on Saturday 6th May.

However, King Charles may, in a couple of quiet moments on the day, enjoy his favourite aperitif, a dry Martini (half gin / half vermouth) in his special glass he reserves for this particular tipple, and raise a celebratory Laphraiog 15-year old whisky to top the day off.

The Vin-X Team hope you all enjoy celebrating this historic occasion with family and friends and that you enjoy a favourite tipple too.
