Ten percent inflation is eating away at value in nearly all markets. Consumers are dreading how that will feel at 18% with companies and Governments looking for solutions. However, investors in Burgundy and Champagne are currently buffered from some of this. Domaine Leroy wines could be described as ‘liquid gold’ right now.
Domaine Leroy has been listed in the top three most powerful fine wine brands in Liv-ex’s annual Power 100 Ranking in the last few years and is one of the most aspirational labels for investors and collectors. Increased demand in 2022 has driven the volume of Leroy wines traded on Liv-ex to a 17% increase year-on-year. Remarkable, as Leroy wines are notoriously hard to get hold off and this increase is indicative of growing global demand to own these great wines.
Rarity is a key factor
Burgundy’s much smaller production levels supports strong price performance and there’s no sign of investors or collectors being deterred by the current market values. The trend of average 49.6% growth for the region’s wines in the last 12 months sees no sign of abating as inflation and demand continues to rise.
Probably Burgundy’s best-known and most iconic brand, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti continues to see sustained levels of interest from investors. Prices for DRC wines routinely achieve six figures and the most eye-catching on record are the two bottles (75cl) of Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Romanée Conti 1945 sold at auction in 2018, one for US$558,000 and the second US$496,000. Liv-ex’s DRC index has risen by 40.6% in the last year and is up 16.9% in 2022 to August.
